Exterior railings and decking get more sun and rain than any door, so they fail faster. Grey, splintering timber is not worn out — it is usually just stripped of its finish, and underneath it the wood is almost always still good.

That is worth knowing before you price a replacement. Tearing out a deck and rebuilding it costs several times what refinishing the same boards costs, and most of the decks we are called out to look at do not need it.

We strip back the failed coating, sand out the weathering and the splintering, and re-seal the timber so it stops drinking water every time it rains. Handrails get extra attention — they are the part people actually put their hands on, and rough timber there is what makes a deck feel neglected.
