On the older houses the entry is usually solid and often painted. Stripping back to the timber is the job with the biggest visual return here, and the wood underneath is generally sound because it was built heavier than current stock.
On the new builds it is about protecting a large, thin-finished door before Houston gets into it. Doing that in the first few years is cheap; doing it after the bottom rail has softened is a repair.
