Painting a door and refinishing one are different jobs, and which you want depends on the door. Refinishing keeps the wood grain visible under a stain. Painting covers it with solid colour. Neither is better — but a solid colour is the right answer more often than people expect.

It is the right answer when the timber underneath is patchy, repaired, or made of several woods that will never stain evenly. It is also the right answer when you want a colour the wood cannot give you: a black front door, a deep green, the dark navy that half of Houston has gone to in the last few years.

The preparation is the same either way, and it is most of the job. The door comes off, old coatings are stripped rather than scuffed, any damage is repaired, and the whole surface is sanded flat. Paint applied over a failing finish fails with it, no matter how good the paint is.

Then primer suited to the material, and exterior-grade paint built up in coats. On metal doors we use products made for steel — different primer, different topcoat — because house paint on a metal door peels at the edges within a couple of seasons.

One thing we will tell you honestly: a dark colour on a west-facing Houston door gets extremely hot and moves more. It can be done and we do it, but it needs the right product and it needs recoating sooner. We would rather say that before than after.
