Restoration is what we call it when the door needs more than a new finish. The finish has failed, yes — but so has something else: a panel has split, a joint has opened, the bottom rail is soft, or a previous repair was done badly and has to come out before anything else can happen.

That is a different job from refinishing and it is priced differently, so the first thing we do is work out which one you actually need. Plenty of doors that look ruined only need stripping and resealing. Some that look fine have a rotten rail hiding under intact paint. We check before quoting, not after.

On a genuine restoration the order matters. Repairs first: rot cut out and pieced in with matching timber, split panels glued and clamped, loose joints re-wedged. Then the whole door is stripped to bare wood so the repairs and the original surface take colour the same way. A repair finished separately always shows.

Old doors get worked on conservatively. Carving and moulding is stripped by hand rather than machine-sanded, because a sander rounds over detail that somebody cut by hand. Original glass is masked and kept. We are not trying to make a ninety-year-old door look new — we are trying to make it look cared for, which is a different and better thing.

If the honest answer is that the door is past saving, we say so. A door with rot through the stiles and a frame that has gone with it is a replacement, and spending restoration money on it only delays that.
