River Oaks has doors you cannot buy any more. Estates from the 1920s and 1930s with hand-cut joinery, solid mahogany and walnut, leaded and beveled glass made when that was ordinary work. A door like that is not a fixture, it is part of the house.
Which changes how we work on it. We strip by hand rather than machine-sanding anything with carving or moulding, because an aggressive sander rounds over detail that took someone a day to cut. Glass is masked before a brush goes near it. Where a stile or rail has opened up, we repair the joint instead of replacing the piece.
The other thing we do on these is resist the urge to make them look new. A ninety-year-old door should look ninety years old and cared for — even colour, sound finish, no grey. Stripping it back to raw and staining it uniform kills exactly what makes it worth keeping.
