Galveston is the toughest environment for exterior timber anywhere we travel. Salt in the air constantly, direct storm exposure, and sun with no tree cover to break it. A finish that lasts eight years inland will not last that here, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not worked on the island.
The island also has beautiful old doors — Victorian and early twentieth-century joinery on the historic houses, much of it original. Those are absolutely worth restoring, and they need doing properly: full strip, careful repair of the joints, and a finish built up in more coats than we would use inland.
We are straight about the maintenance on island properties. A refinished door here needs looking at sooner than one in Sugar Land. Planning for that from the start is cheaper than discovering it.
