Humble has a lot of housing from the seventies and eighties on wooded lots, which means most of the doors we see here have been refinished at least once by somebody else.
That previous work is the first thing we look at. A finish applied over an old one instead of stripping it comes away in sheets within a couple of years, and we find that more often here than anywhere. We strip back to bare wood, because a new finish is only as sound as whatever is underneath it.
The tree cover also means damp rather than sun is the main enemy: mildew working into the grain, swelling that makes the door stick in summer, and soft timber at the bottom rail. We seal the top and bottom edges as part of the job, which is where a shaded door takes on water.
