Memorial homes tend to have generous entries — eight-foot double doors, sidelights, sometimes a transom above — set back under mature pines. That combination behaves differently from an exposed suburban door.
The pines filter the worst of the UV, so these finishes often last longer than the same door in Katy. What gets them instead is damp. Needles hold moisture against the threshold, air moves slowly under the canopy, and the bottom of the door stays wet for hours after rain. We find soft timber at the bottom rail on doors whose upper two-thirds still look fine.
Sidelights and transoms are part of the job, not an extra. A refinished door flanked by two grey, chalky sidelights looks worse than before we came, because now the contrast is obvious.
