Bunker Hill is a mix of original Memorial-era houses and substantial rebuilds. On the older ones the front door is frequently better timber than anything a builder would fit today, which makes replacement a downgrade dressed up as an upgrade.
We see a lot of doors here that have been refinished before, sometimes more than once. Previous work matters: a finish that was coated over instead of stripped comes off in sheets, and any filler used along the way has to be dealt with before a new finish goes on. We strip to bare wood rather than adding another layer to the pile.
The wooded lots bring the usual Memorial-area damp, so we seal the top and bottom edges of the door as part of the job. Those are end grain, nobody looks at them, and on most doors they were never sealed at all.
