Door Refinishing Process
Step by step, so you know exactly what happens to your door.
The process of door refinishing
Let us give you some background information step by step, to give you a clear idea of what we provide for our customers.
-
Step 1 Door Removal & Entryway Protection
We start by carefully removing your door from its frame and taking off all hardware, including hinges. To ensure your home remains secure and clean, we then cover the entryway with plastic sheeting. This helps keep out dust and debris, and prevents bugs or lizards from entering while we work on your door’s restoration.
-
Step 2 Strip & Smooth the Surface
We apply a professional-grade stripping solution to lift off old paint, stain, and varnish. After letting it sit to break down the existing finish, we carefully scrape away the softened layers — repeating if needed to fully clear the surface. Once stripped, our multi-stage sanding process smooths out weathered or damaged areas so the surface is even, clean, and ready to absorb new stain deep into the wood grain.
-
Step 3 Staining & Detail Work
Before staining, we carefully match the color to your existing door finish to keep the look consistent. We protect any glass windows by masking them off, and if your door has a window grill, we can remove and repaint it on request. We then apply 2 to 3 coats of high-quality stain, letting each layer dry properly to build a rich, even color.
-
Step 4 Final Protective Finish
To complete the process, we apply a clear finish coat using a spray gun for a smooth, even look. This final layer seals in the stain and protects the door from harsh weather, UV rays, and everyday wear — a durable barrier that helps your door stay looking fresh for longer.
-
Step 5 Door Reinstallation & Final Check
After the refinishing process is complete, we carefully reinstall your door back onto its hinges, and make sure all hardware, locks, and hinges are aligned and working properly.
